Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm (4 January – 20 September ) was a German philologist, jurist, and mythologist. He is known as the discoverer of Grimm's law (linguistics), the co-author with his brother Wilhelm of the monumental Deutsches Wörterbuch, the author of Deutsche Mythologie and, more popularly, as one of the Brothers Grimm and the editor of Grimm's Fairy Tales. John Duncan (Scottish, ), "Yorinda and Yoringel in the Witch's Wood" "Jorinda and Joringel " illustrates Grimm's fairy tale of the same name, which tells how two lovers wander into a wood where a witch turns the girl, Jorinda, into a nightingale and carries her off to her castle pins.

Jorindel turned to see the reason, and beheld his Jorinda changed into a nightingale, so that her song ended with a mournful /jug, jug/. An owl with fiery eyes flew three times round them, and three times screamed: 'Tu whu! Tu whu! Tu whu!' Jorindel could not move; he stood fixed as a stone, and could neither weep, nor speak, nor stir hand or foot. Jorinda and Jorindel. By Mavis Gallan t. Septem Save this story for later. Jorinda sat down to gaze upon the sun; Jorindel sat by her side; and both felt sad, they knew not why; but it seemed as if they were to be parted from one another for ever. They had wandered a long way; and when they looked to see which way they should go home, they found themselves at a loss to know what path to take.

A while ago, I found this little gem of a book with a few fairy tales in there, eight altogether. The title story " Jorinda and Joringel " used to be one of my favourite ones, a girl - Jorinda - is turned into a bird by a wicked witch and her lover - Jorindel - has to find a way to get her back.

Jorinda and Joringel There was once an old castle in the midst of a large and thick forest, and in it an old woman who was a witch dwelt all alone. In the day-time she changed herself into a cat or a screech-owl, but in the evening she took her proper shape again as a human being/10().

Joringel looked through the bushes, and saw the old walls of the castle close at hand. He was horror-stricken and filled with deadly fear. Jorinda was singing, "My little bird, with the necklace red, Sings sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, He sings that the dove must soon be dead, Sings sorrow, sor - jug, jug, jug." Joringel looked for Jorinda.

Now, there was once a maiden whose name was Jorinda. She was prettier than all the pretty girls that ever were seen before, and a shepherd lad, whose name was Jorindel, was very fond of her, and they were soon to be married.

One day they went to walk in the wood, that they might be alone. Jorinda and Jorindel by Mavis de Trafford Young. Start Your Free Trial. will help you with any book or any question. Our summaries and analyses are written by experts, and your.

They were lovers who unwittingly fell into the fairy's trap. Jorinda was turned into a nightingale and Jorindel eventually found a way to. Jorinda and Jorindel (yes, that’s the spelling I was expecting) is a tale I’ve read but never really given much attention to, so thanks for the synopsis but I still barely remember it.

The first motif, The Babes in the Wood, is best known in the Hansel and Gretel version as you rightly say, but it’s the development that poses the questions you raise.
